Remove Background From a Photo
You need the thing without the room behind it. A sticker for a story, a product on a plain card, your face over a colour that matches the rest of the post. What you have is a photo with a kitchen in it.
That’s how you remove a background from a photo here: upload it, pick what sits behind, download a PNG.
The old answer was to open Photoshop, remember where the selection tools moved to this year, and spend twenty minutes on a picture that will be looked at for two seconds. For one image that is not a plan, it is a punishment.
A browser does it in about as long as it takes to find the file.
Which photos come out clean
The model cuts along what it can see. Give it a clear edge and it gives you a clean one back.
- One subject. A person, a shoe, a bottle, a cat. Two people standing apart usually survive; a crowd does not.
- A background that is not the same colour as the thing in front of it. A white mug on a white table has no edge to find.
- Even light. A hard shadow welding the subject to the floor reads as part of the subject, because that is what it looks like.
Megapixels matter far less than separation. A phone snapshot against a plain wall beats a studio shot of someone in a black coat against a dark curtain, every time.
What actually happens
Open the background remover and drop in a JPG, PNG or WEBP — up to 25 MB, up to 6000 pixels on the long side. Nothing is uploaded until you do.
Then pick what goes behind: nothing at all, a flat colour, or a picture of your own. The preview shows the result before you commit to anything, which is the moment to notice a missing shoelace rather than after you have posted it.
Download as PNG and the transparency comes with it. Download as JPG and the subject sits on white, because JPG has no way to store “nothing here”. Your photo comes back at the size you sent it — nothing is scaled down to save us work.
Removing a background online means the work happens on a server somewhere. Here that server is ours. The cutting happens on it, the file is not handed to some other company’s API on the way through, and the copy we made is deleted as soon as you have yours. Use photos you have the right to use — your own, your product, something you were given.
If what you actually need is the file itself cleaned up — camera tags, location, the trail a photo carries — that is a different job. Fresh Export rebuilds the file without any of that, and leaves the picture exactly as it is, background and all.
Where the file lands
On a phone it does not appear in your camera roll. Safari drops it in Downloads inside the Files app, and Photos stays empty until you put it there yourself. The article about that folder walks through it if that is new; the rest of the phone notes are in the blog.
A transparent PNG stays transparent in Files, but some apps flatten it to white when you attach it — worth checking where you plan to publish.
When the edge tears
It will not be perfect on every photo, and pretending otherwise would waste your time.
- Loose hair. Individual strands against a busy background are the classic failure. Against a plain wall they often survive.
- Mesh and lace. Chain-link, tulle, a bike wheel — anything where background shows through hundreds of small holes tends to come back either solid or chewed.
- Glass and smoke. Half-transparent things have no correct answer. The cut has to choose, and it chooses badly.
- Motion blur. A smeared edge is not an edge.
When that happens you have two options, and neither involves buying anything. Try a different frame where the subject is further from what is behind it. Or take the PNG as it is and fix two or three spots in whatever editor you already have — cleaning up a few pixels is a minute of work, cutting the whole thing out is not.
This is a tool for getting a usable PNG quickly. It is not a retoucher, and on a difficult photo a person with a tablet will still beat it.
FAQ
What file do I get back?
A PNG with real transparency, or a JPG with the subject on a flat colour. PNG for anything you will place on top of something else; JPG only when transparency does not matter.
Does it shrink my photo?
No. It comes back at the resolution you sent, up to 6000 pixels on the long side and 25 MB.
Does my photo go to another company?
No. The cut is made on our own server, and our copy is deleted right after you download. Nothing is forwarded to an outside service.
Can I put the subject on my own background?
Yes. Upload the photo, then upload the picture you want behind it, and the preview shows the two together before you download.
Will it work on hair or fur?
Often, if the background behind the strands is plain. Against a busy background expect a rough edge — that is the honest limit of cutting along what is visible.
Most photos are not difficult, though. A subject, a wall behind it, one upload on the background remover, and the thing you needed is a file.
