Where Do Downloads Go on iPhone?
You tap Download in Safari, the little arrow next to the address bar blinks once, and then the video is gone. You open Photos, scroll to the bottom of Recents, and it is not there. So you download it again, and it is still not there.
That’s where downloads go on iPhone: Files, not Photos.
It worked both times. The file is sitting in a folder most people never open. An iPhone keeps web downloads and camera roll videos in two completely separate places, and Safari always picks the quiet one.
Save Video and Save to Files are not the same button
Every video on an iPhone lives in one of two worlds. Photos holds what the camera shot, what you saved with Save Video, and what an app pushed into the camera roll. Files holds documents, and as far as iOS is concerned an MP4 you pulled off a web page is a document.
When Safari finishes a download it does not ask you anything. It drops the file into Files and shows that small arrow. Tapping the arrow opens the download list, not the camera roll. The video is never missing. It just never had a reason to appear in Photos.
That is the whole save to Files versus Save Video question in one line. Save Video puts a copy in Photos. Save to Files puts it in a folder you can browse. You are allowed to have both.
Where the iPhone Downloads folder actually is
Open the Files app, the grey folder icon that came with the phone and is probably on your third home screen. Tap Browse at the bottom, then look for Downloads.
- With iCloud Drive switched on, Downloads sits under iCloud Drive.
- With it switched off, Downloads sits under On My iPhone.
- Either way, sort by date and the newest file is at the top.
If Safari downloads on iPhone are new to you, this folder is going to be a surprise. Every PDF, every zip, every MP4 you have ever tapped through has been piling up in there since you got the phone.
There is a faster route right after a download. Tap the arrow in Safari, tap the file in the list, and it opens straight away. Holding it gives you the Share sheet without a trip through Files.
Moving a download into Photos
- Open Files. Tap Browse, open Downloads, and find the video at the top of the list.
- Tap it once. It plays right there, which is a good moment to check you grabbed the clip you meant to.
- Open Share. The square with the arrow pointing up, bottom left on most screens.
- Choose Save Video. It sits in the row of grey actions under the app icons, so scroll that row sideways if you do not see it.
- Check Photos. The clip appears in Recents with today’s date, not the date it was filmed.
The original stays in Downloads. You now have two copies of the same video, which matters if storage is tight, so delete the one in Files once you can see it in Photos.
It works in reverse too. In Photos, tap Share, then Save to Files, and pick where it goes. That is how you get a clip out of the camera roll and into a folder you can AirDrop or attach.
What changes on iOS 18 and with iCloud
Two things move the goalposts.
iCloud Drive. With it on, your Downloads folder lives in iCloud, so the same folder shows up on your iPad and your Mac. It also means a file can show a small cloud icon instead of a thumbnail. That copy is not on the phone yet. Tap it once and wait for it to come down.
iOS 18. Settings were rearranged, so Safari now lives under Settings, then Apps, then Safari. Scroll to Downloads and you can change where new files land: iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, or a folder you choose. If you save a lot of video, pointing this at On My iPhone keeps it off your iCloud storage. Photos was rebuilt in the same release, so Recents now sits under Collections and a saved clip may not be where your thumb expects it.
The same thing happens with the tools here
None of this is specific to one site. Any file you download in Safari takes the same route, including the ones you save from this one.
Grab a clip with the TikTok video downloader and it lands in Downloads, not Photos. A Reel from the Instagram Reels downloader behaves the same way, and so does a Short from the YouTube Shorts downloader. Run a file through the metadata cleaner and the cleaned copy comes back as another Safari download, into the same folder.
So when a video seems to have vanished after any of those, open Downloads before you try again. Downloading a second time only gives you a second copy. The step-by-step guides in the blog all end at this folder.
